The Reason for Ratings
Golden Racquets (GR) established a Pickleball rating system so that players who want “competitive play” can choose venues that require a minimum skill level. Please note that GR’s tennis ratings do not carry over to Pickleball.
GR does not require its Pickleball members to be rated. If you do not have a GR Pickleball rating, you may play in any of its “non-competitive” venues. (Rated players also play in these “non-competitive” venues.) See further explanation below.
Pickleball rating categories and criteria
GR established five (5) Pickleball rating levels: 3.0, 3.3, 3.5, 3.8, and 4.0. These levels are modeled on the skill levels established by USA Pickleball, at https://usapickleball.org/skill-level/ Please note that there is no specific criteria for a 3.3 or 3.8. GR will rate a player as a 3.3 or 3.8 if he or she meets some (but not all) of the criteria for the next highest level.
GR has modified the rating definitions (and how they are applied) somewhat to meet its needs. Therefore, a GR rating may be different from a Pickleball rating computed under strict application of the USA Pickleball definitions.
GR’s “competitive” venues
GR currently offers two “competitive” Pickleball venues, which play at Burke Racquet Club (“Burke”) on Wednesdays and Fridays. A GR member must have a rating of 3.5 or higher to play at either of the two competitive venues.
GR currently has two “seasons” of play at these Burke venues. The first season runs from September to early May, and the second season runs from late May through August. Sign-up for regular play in these (and other) GR Pickleball venues ordinarily occurs in August (first season) and April (second season). GR members may be added to the substitute lists for these venues after regular play has begun.
How GR rates Pickleball players
GR established a Pickleball Rating Committee (“PRC”) in 2024, which is separate from GR’s Tennis Rating Committee. If a player requests a Pickleball rating, the PRC will provide the player with an opportunity to demonstrate his or her level of play. This will occur either through observation at one of GR’s venues or an arrangement to meet at some other location.
In addition to skill evaluations by the PRC’s members, the PRC consults with GR venue captains concerning the individual’s level of play. The PRC will then decide on the appropriate Pickleball rating for the individual.
How to get a rating
The current Chair of the PRC is Chip Vernon. If you want to be rated, you should contact him at cvernon7@gmail.com , You will then be provided with information about how to get a rating.
